The fenestron describes a ducted tail rotor. The concept of a ducted rotor has been deployed on early 60's by Sud Aviation, then the Aerospatiale, which became Eurocopter. It is fitting numbers of machines, as the Gazelle, the Dauphin, the EC120, the EC135.

The scale design of the fenestron is a technical challenge on several aspects, as there is a bunch of parameters to manage. The above mentionned helicopters are all equipped with 3 or 4 blades rotors. With scale models, these rotors are creating a very large torque, that your tail rotor system must be able to cancel. Moreover, you have to obtain a decent amount of extra thrust to keep control of the yaw axis, thus in any wind situations.

The first attempts to realize a fenestron have been done for quite a while. Very often, this was a adaptation of a multibladed hub onto a conventional tail rotor gear box, and some down-trimmed tail rotor blades. The results were often disapointing, and todays gyroscopes being more and more reactive, the limitations have been rapidly met.
Benoit Vigier and Olivier Grioche worked together to get a real fenestron, not by adapting a existing tail rotor, but made from scratch. This is the VOG (Vigier-Olivier-Grioche). The VOG fenestron is entirely modular, here is how:
Fenestrons have a smaller diameter than their conventional counterparts, and the blades have a very thin chord, the speed has to be fairly high to get the required thrust. The VOG fenestron runs ideally between 8500 and 9500 rpm. You have 2 alternatives to get this speed: 1) install the fenestron rotor on a standard tail rotor gearbox and use speed up gear on the main mechanic (as on vario for example) or 2) get the Cine-Scale intergrated speed up gearbox. In this case, this means that no further alteration from you mechanic is required.
The blades are molded in plain carbon fiber and have a specific asymetrical airfoil. Their chord and and thickness is constant. This allows you to trim them down to the exact lenght required, depending of your models scale ratio +/- 1:3,8 to +/- 1:5.
The VOG fenestron has excellent dynamics and permits de use of 4 bladed main 2m50 main rotors without any problem. Moreover, even with a stong sidewind, you can let your gyro work in heading hold mode, the fenestron will still be able to generate the exact thrust needed.
Each blade holder is held by a module. All modules are identicals. Only the angular layout of the flanges decides the number of blades. Simple and efficient.
